MK, a 15-year-old girl, was jointly charged with her mother in a case of manslaughter. Both pleaded
not guilty when the case was first heard in August 2019. However, by March 2020 — when the
national lockdown was imposed — no prosecution witnesses had appeared in court.
On October 8, a legal application was made before the trial magistrate, not for bail, but seeking
dismissal of the case on the grounds that continued prosecution without progress had become
unlawful. The magistrate granted the application, and the case was dismissed.
